Defend your trees against gypsy moth and cankerworm infestations with safe, non-chemical
sticky tree band treatments.
The Cankerworm in native to North America and, in most situations, controlled by natural
predators. Yet, in some urban areas the cankerworm has become a severe problem because
natural controls do not appear to be working. One of the areas this occurred is Charlotte.
Cankerworms feed on the leaves of many different hardwood trees, but the willow oak,
however, has on significant problem here in Charlotte, and that is the fall cankerworm. We
are one of three places in the US and Canada where the fall cankerworm has devastated our
trees.
The adult is a grayish brown moth about 5/16" long. The male has wings and can fly while the
female is wingless. Adults emerge from the ground days after the first hard frost. Mating
occurs while the female is climbing up the tree trunk to the upper most branches to lay the
eggs.
Besides defoliation, they are a nuisance. Larvae descending on silken threads drop onto
people, pets, care and everything else.
In Charlotte, tree banding has proven successful when done at the correct time.
